Firefox to use RealAlternative?, [SOLVED] Options

My Firefox browser always prompts to download Real Player instead of using RealAlternative. RA works great on IE but I prefer Firefox. How do I get Firefox to use my RealAlternative instead of prompting to download Real Player? I tried the Firefox settings, but it seems to ignore it. Do I need to reinstall, or what? Thanks for your help.

I use firefox... just matter of changing association. Normally will open it in default application i.e. Real Player.

Assuming you have Real Alternative with MPC installed.....

Tools..options..Downloads..filetypes.. select filetype (RAM)
Change action.. Open them in this application
Browse to MediaPlayerClassic (C:\Program Files\Media Player Classic\mplayerc.exe)

You can do same thing for Quicktime files

Thanks Mischcabob. Like I mentioned in my original post, I tried setting Firefox to use RealAlternative (exactly as you described above), but it has ignored it. I still get prompted by Firefox to down load Real Player rather than using what I have told it to use (RealAlternative). When I use IE, that same site starts RealAlternative, just like I want Firefox to do. That's why I'm stumped.
btw: I also tried the FoxyTunes extension, but that didn't work either. Do you have any ideas as to why the normal Firefox assignment procedure is ineffectual in my case? Thanks for responding.

Never had any probs using Foxytunes either. Using Firefox 1.0 final?

Make sure have real alternative 1.30 which includes RealMedia plugin for Opera/Mozilla/Netscape.

Note:
* .smi and .smil files only play the first part of a clip.
* RealMedia DirectShow splitter does not work with streaming content. You must use Media Player Classic to play streaming content.

Which real player files are you trying to play.. maybe not supported by real alternative.
Is it just one particular site? Also, make sure plugin path in Firefox points to MPC, not real alternative. Real player should not be installed either.

Yeah. I wanted until 1.0 final then downloaded and installed. I've been using it since then.

I tried to determine the version, but couldn't. All I could determine is MPC v 6.4.8.1 but that doesn't help.

I was curious about that too, so I went over to Yahoo New Videos and tried to change my settings. It shows Real as being unavailable when using Firefox but shows its as an option to select when I go there with IE.

Well... RAM is not listed then it's not installed properly with plugin or its not activated.
Re-install real alternative 1.30 and make sure plugin for mozilla/netscape is checked.

RPA... is an real player authorized third-party Add-in that give you access to functions like a toolbar and buttons.
(Active X add-in likely only works with I.E)

Keep in mind some sites are biased.. You will also notice streaming sites prefer windows media, apple quicktime or only use real media depending on which browser you use (depending on programming code by webmaster.) I tried the Yahoo news site you mentioned. Mine loaded in new window with WMP player plugin and played "Daughter Missing video" just fine.

Well, this is just too weird. I uninstalled the old realalternative (had to do it manually because uninstall couldn't find uninst000.dat), ran Norton Windoctor to then clear out the resultant registry errors, then re-installed RA 1.3. Guess what. I got the same results! So just for the heck of it, under Change Action for RAM files I clicked on Open them in Default Application instead of Open them in this Application specifying ...mplayerc.exe and this time it worked! Incidently, RAM files still do not appear in the plugins list.
I haven't a clue why it's behaving this way. All I know is that it's working now. Thanks for your help and patience.
btw: if there's anything you would like me to do to try and figure out why this strange behavior is occurring, I'd be happy to accommodate.

Actually RAm should appear in the filetypes box, not in plugins. I tried it using default application... mine works either way.

Anyway, glad you got it to work.
