Ok today i went to play a mpg file and when it started playing i noticed that the colors were all messed up. The audio was fine though. SO when i tried to play an avi and wmv and to my surprise they both looked the same, all the colors r messed up. I tried using Winamp, Media player 9 and DivX and on all 3 programs, using all 3 files formats the colors were still messed up. Does anyone have an idea of what is wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

depends on where the problem is.

1. I have some less quality files, in format WMV / WMA and can only play them in WMP 10. In other players they come messed up, too.

The option is to use the WMP 10 instead of WMP 9.
But in your case it happens to other formats, too. Maybe worth a try.

2. The other option >> Open the files with "G-Spot", gives you information about the neccessary codec. Now you can see if the codecs missing.
I recommend before downloading all kind of codecs or packs, to read the pinned topic "Guide for using Codecs".

MPegs come in many flavours, but for most part require DirectShow or DirectX 9X installed. Also, try installing FFDshow which supports most common formats. In case of MPEG1/2 files, you will require MPEg decoder bundled with codec pack or DVD software like PowerDVD/WINDVD.

Simply upgrading WMP10 (if running WINXP recommended) it will install MS media codecs to help you play the WMV file. (You may need to adjust color overlay settings in player.)

Like Tyler says, try to identify the video codec the files uses.

OK I have a similar problem (I think). The sound is fine but the colours are all messed up; sometimes it looks as if the video is rendered in 256 colours.

Where: DVD playback, all kinds of video clips: avi, mpg, rm, wmf. The only format that plays fine is Quicktime mov.

What I tried:
- Unistalled as many codecs as I could find and the DVD player;
- Uninstalled the video card driver in safe mode, used DriverCleaner, reinstalled with the latest version (NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 on WinXP);
- DirectX 9c was already installed;
- Followed instructions in the "Guide to using Codecs" to reinstall codecs;
- Reinstalled the DVD player (PowerDVD)
- Installed Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative packs, made WMP Classic default player.

Result: nada. Same probelm - no better, no worse.

I also am having the same problem. It started for me when I reinstalled windows, I used the same codec pack I was using before the only difference I can figure is I have switched to the newest drivers for my nvidia geforce graphics card. Trying to locate older driver for it. If that fixes it for me I'll let ya know.

Downgrading my graphics driver to version 71.89 fixed up the picture just fine for me. I also noticed on a seperate post that it corrected the same problem for another person. NVidia just put out a poor driver.
