Hi there.

As I see, most codecs are distributed as freeware and can be downloaded freely. But how about picking one of those - lets say the old Indeo 5.1 and put the codec installer on a commercial CD - not to sell the codec itself but to give the user a helping hand, like when packing the DirectX Installer along, just to get him going and make him able to play the video files that came along with the software he bought.

I'm particulary interrested in the Indeo codec because most MS Systems had this shipped, well until SP1 of Win XP. But the codec can still be downloaded as freeware, so I thought it would be a nice idea to use this codec.

So, is it possible to redistribute the codec installer on a commercial cd or over a company website?

I know, DivX or XVid might give better results and smaller filesize - but DivX is expensive (for commercial use) and the legal uses of XVid is even more unclear to me.

Any help apreciated.

(If you know a free codec I could use, I would be interrested too
needed specs: video possible up to 2000x2000 and good quality at acceptable filesizes)
