Hello, I'm a newbie with codec. I search on the forum and in the site and I well understood that a tool like Gspot can help me to know which codec I must use to read a movie and if I have it on my system...
But I also saw that different codec can be used to read the same film : as an exemple to read a mpg4 movie, you can use DivX, Xvid and other ....
Moreover I saw that there can be problems having multiple codecs for one encoding...
That's why I want to know if it's possible to see what codec is used when I read a movie in WMP for exemple. Does WMP use the same codec than BSplayer to read mpg4 ? Can I select the codec I want WMP use ?
And then which codec pack choose : one where there are more than one codec for an encoding or the contrary ?

First off mpeg4 IS DivX / XviD.
GSpot will tell you what codec been used to encode movie (and hence decode it).
Codec packs - be careful - CHOOSE your codecs INDIVIDUALLY from the packs!
Mutiple instances of the same codecs installed on a PC = bad news!
To view installed codecs on your system try:
Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager :
expand Sound game & Video controllers:
Then properties for either Video Codecs or Audio Codecs. (Select Properties Tab).
It's worth mentioning that some players may have built in codecs that bypass installed codecs.

codec = mathematical algorithm that compresses / decompresses (movie) data using either a lossless or usually lossy process.
filter = a process that can be used to alter the source. e.g. resize a movie etc.

...... also, to see what codec is used when watching in WMP, go to File menu/Properites.
And you can set which decoder to work in each codec's Config. (DivX, FFDShow, etc.)
And Pls don't install codec packs. You can see half of the topics are about 'codec packs messed up my system ....', so try to install what you need
