Hi guys i hope some one can help me with this problem ,

I have a avi file which plays fine all the way through , but when i convert it to dvd (vobs) it all goes out of sync , ive used gspot and it says i have the right codecs installed ... any ideas what is happening guys ?

many thanx for ya time
Mischcabob
Not a simple answer. Didn't give me enough info to answer... somehow during process of converting/encoding to DVD (MPEG2 format) a lag of video/audio occurred.

Assuming you are using a quick, dirty method with an all-in-one program for converting?
Some original AVI have AC3 or variable bitrate MPG layer 2 audio.. so don't always translate very well. Also, possible the original AVI was not encoded very well and may be out of sync... but likely won't notice till half way through the movie.

Did you try opening it with VirtualDub? Maybe this AVI has a VBR audio stream so you have to save the audio part separately to WAV format and later, when converting to DVD, use this audio file as the audio source.
You can download Virtualdub and its mods from http://www.free-codecs.com/
RiPPeR
Yes Mischcabob it is only really noticable half way thru the film , im useing dvdsanta to convert the avi , i have total divx codec pack installed and also VP6 VFW codec ,divx codec and xvid codec , is there a better way but still quite easy other than a "dirty method" ?

chp i cant see that dvdsanta allows to add the audio from a different source sad.gif

could it be something to do with coverting in PAL format and not NTSC ?

many thanx so far thou guys smile.gif
Mischcabob
So did eliminate possibility that orig AVI file has a video/audio lag?

If you in north america/japan... should be using NTSC (29.97fps). Unless your DVD player can play both PAL/NTSC?

Chp mentioned VirtuaDUB Mod.. that's preferred method I use. It can get technical quite fast... Basically involves demuxing audio portion... converting to 48kHz WAV file and saving video as separate elementary stream. I use TMPGenc Plus to multiplex both audio/video streams to encode to MPEG2 (DVD format). Also, I use external audio encoder called LAME plugin with TMPGEnc to get superior sound. Have I lost you yet?

Here's the guide that might help (some steps may not apply):

you lost me after the 2nd line lol tongue.gif , as i say im new to doing this and to be honest its bloody hard lol , i have done some with dvdsanta and it was easy just load the avi and bang you got the dvd click yes to write and its all done , i like it like that hehehehe

Im in the UK thats why i used PAL, ill have a look thru the links and see if any can make sense lol

thanx again smile.gif
Mischcabob
Sorry about that.. been doing this for years. DVD Santa is a great program that works most of the time, but sometimes "it throws you a curve ball."

It's only when you get VBR Mp2 or AC3 that it might have problems. Use GSPOT to identify what type of audio and video codec it uses. Just matter of converting MPEg audio to WAV... any converter will work. Can still use DVDSanta which should allow you to select the video (AVI file) and the newly converted WAV file. Can also try Nero which has easy learning curve.

Anyway, check out the links and if you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.
PS. Check out the pinned topic for more help
RiPPeR
Thanx a lot for your help ill have a look and see what i can do smile.gif

ill report back soon smile.gif
RiPPeR
Im back lol, no matter what i do when im in TMPGEnc i follow all the steps but on section 4/5 of the wizard im getting 167% of the disc size and can get it down to 97% . ive gone thru it about 20 times selecting NTSC and PAL (the disc does say NTSC but is it still alright to write in pal as im in the UK)

any ideas hoe to get this size down ?

thanx
Mischcabob
Have to convert the MP2 audio that you got from VirtualDub into WAV that's why. TMPGenc can't interpret VBR audio files or AC3 for that matter.

Any typical audio encoder will work. I use CDEX (freeware), but can use Nero to encode into WAV as well.
RiPPeR
i tried ripping the audio useing virtualdubmod but it says 16 hours lol , when the help files says a few mins lol

shall i give up heheheh

smile.gif I said at the beginning that VBR is the problem wink.gif

But 16 hours??? huh.gif That's a quality!

Well, so what VirtualDub or GSpot reports about the audio format exactly? Would you please share that information with us? rolleyes.gif smile.gif
RiPPeR
for the audio gspot says "0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3"

as it stands up to know ..... i tried to rip the audio from the avi , and it was 284mb , then i tried to convert to wav which made the file 43.4mb ive know tried to put them together again in tmpgenc and its doing but says 36 hours lol , a quick query when the audio is in .wav format can you play it and hear the audio or just hear a high pitched squeal ?

ill keep trying coz i dont like to be beat but i must say this is bloody doing my head in hehehe tongue.gif

thanx blink.gif
Mischcabob
Sorry having these probs. Gspot indicates MPEG1 layer 3? Sounds right. Also, may have noticed VBR is highlighted, not CBR.

284MB sounds right for compressed direct stream copy. It only takes me about 20-25 mins demux typical stream from VirtualDub Mod. DON't convert to WAV using VirtualDUB... doesn't work since only changes the header.

43.4mB can't be right.. should be over a 1 gig if you expanded to a WAV file. To encode WAV file I just run Nero 6 StartSmart. Under CD..audio..encode audio files
Add the MP3 file and select 48khz WAV as destination format.

I assume you have fairly fast computer... anything less then P3 computer will be too slow. Be aware that encoding the file in TMPGEnc does take several hours... normally for me using Athlon XP 1600+ CPU... takes about 5-6 hours. Make sure you select 1-pass and MP2 CBR (constant bitrate)in TMPGenc. That will shorten your time by least a half!
RiPPeR
HI again .. ok ill try to convert in nero and see what results i get from there lol ,

i have a P4 3.2 HT with 768mb 400ddr mem so shud beable to cope with it lol if not i will give up lol

thanx again be back soon tongue.gif
RiPPeR
can you please try to give me the program to use and step by step to rip the audio coz when i try to load it into nero i get "cannot open file c:\xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx etc so im thinking its not ripping correctly , ive got virtualdub and the virtual dub mod

thanx again
euromix
The link to TMPGEnc

Ultra edition suite includes Nero StartSmart. Details here
RiPPeR
thanks for that m8 , but its the ripping it from the avi that im having probs with i think

so i need to get the right way to take the VBR audio off the avi and convert to .wmv

thanx
Mischcabob
Normally Nero 6 Ultra Edition should have the codecs/plugins... unless has problem decoding the MPG layer 3 audio?

Just take that 284MB file you demuxed from virtualDUB (used part of the guide, right?) and use CDEx to convert to WAV.

CDex (freeware cd ripper/encoder) works well too. Here's more info:
CODE
http://home.iprimus.com.au/alexanderino/cdex/

JUst unzip files into a folder and run the program.
Simply select CONVERT compressed audio file to WAV (3rd bottom right button)
Browse to where the 284MB file is located.
Click CONVERT
RiPPeR
im running the file thru CDEX , the time is running but the total time and time left are at 00:00 , how long does this process usally take you ?
Mischcabob
Hard to tell Rip. Depends on speed of computer, size of audio file and compression.
Mine typically takes 2-3 min to convert to WAV using Nero.

Make sure you have plenty of room for the WAV file. Make note where the file is saved too.
RiPPeR
hmmm .....

time elaspsed 553.48 ¦ time left 00:00 ¦ totoal time 00:00

i think ill shoot myself now sad.gif lol
RiPPeR
ok the story so far , i tried and tried to rip the audio but when i try to convert it to .wav it doesnt , but i have noticed its says on the top of cdex mpeg - wav , so does this mean its not ripped the audio correctly or does it always say that ? there has to be something wrong somewhere ,

so can anyone see where im going wrong or have anymore ideas on how i shud move forward smile.gif

thanx again guys
Mischcabob
Don't know what else to add. You added the LAME encoder to CDEx directory too in case it needs it? Also check the settings:

If doesn't work, just try a different audio encoder.. even WinAMp allows you to ouput to WAV.

Audio out of sync when burning AVI to DVD from Nero 6.
(Solution / Solved)? Maybe!

Over the past few months I have been experiencing a problem with the synchronisation of Audio when burning some AVI files into DVD format.

After searching the web and a lot of trial and error(s), I have now got a solution that has worked on my last 5 AVI to DVD burns, where the sync problem had previously occurred.

Now this solution will only work for AVI (and I think Mpeg) files that the ‘sync’ in the original file is correctly-in-sync, but after burning to DVD, goes more and more out-of-sync over the length of the movie. This problem is not directly linked to Nero, but more to the codecs that Nero uses so any burning software can suffer from the same problem.

After a lot of searches on the web it became clear that this problem was being caused by the compression used for the audio in the original AVI file, and the Codecs that are used to uncompress and recompress during the DVD burn stage. So the easy way to solve the problem is to remove compression all together from the original AVI file. (The audio will be recompressed when the file is converted to DVD)

1. Download: VirtualDub 1.6.5 (Experimental). This can be found here: http://www.soft32.com/download-VirtualDub-81642-5.html but can be found in a lot of places on the web. It is one of the best free!! bits of software for modifying Video files, and support a good number of different formats including AVI, Mpeg and Dat files. Extract all the files from the ‘VirtualDub-1.6.5.zip’ into a directory and just run the ‘VirtualDub.exe’. This is the only bit of software that is required to fix the sync problem. (P.S. As this is a experimental / beta bit of software, if you have problems running it then simply get version 1.5.? (Release Version), as I think it will work just as good, but I have not tested this.

2. After VirtulDub is up and running, load your original File in [File/ Open Video File…]. At this point you may see a message box warning of a potential problem with the header. This will occur with most AVI file that would go out of sync if converted, and is one of the main reasons the sync goes out after being burned to DVD but is in sync when played from the original file (the other reason being frame rate, but lets not go there as changing frame rate is a nightmare, and this seams to fix the problem regardless of the rate).

3. The message box will state how to fix the problem by uncompressing to wav and recompressing, which in a way is what we are going to do (but missing out the recompressing part).

4. From the drop-down-menu, select: [Audio / Full Processing Mode]. This will enable other items on the Audio menu (including the Compression item).

5. From the drop-down-menu, select: [Audio / Compression…]. This will display a ‘Select audio compression’ window.

6. Select the compression type ‘<No compression (PCM)>’. This states that you do not want any compression.

7. Now we need to save the audio (without any compression) to a WAV file. From the drop-down-menu, select: [File / Save WAV…]. Giving the name ‘YourMovieName.wav’. This will take a few minutes but you will get a wav file about 1.6 times the size of the original file (so make sure you have enough room on your hard-drive).

8. Check the Wav file you have created by opening it (not in VirualDub yet). You should be checking that the sound sounds right. If it is noticeably fast or slow then you have either not done it right or your codecs are totally messed up. I can only suggest doing a search for ‘ACE Mega CoDecS Pack’ and installing that, as it has some very good codecs (and a few bad ones), but fixes more than it breaks (and it’s also free!!).

9. Now we need to stick the new uncompressed audio back to the original file.

10. Load your original Full AVI File in [File / Open Video File…] again (if you have previously closed it.)

11. From the drop-down-menu, select: [Audio / WAV Audio]. This will display a file dialog requesting a WAV file to be used. Select the WAV file you have just created.

12. From the drop-down-menu, select: [Audio / Interleaving…]. This will display the ‘Audio/Video Interleave Options’ screen.

13. Set: Preload = 1000… Interleave audio every = 1 (frames)… Delay audio track by = 0 ms. And select ‘OK’. Almost done now…

14. From the drop-down-menu, select: [Video / Direct Stream Copy]. This is quite important as it ensures that the video and audio does not go out of sync again. As the audio will now remain the same run time as the video.

15. From the drop-down-menu, select: [File / Save As AVI…]. This will display a save dialog. IMPORTANT!!! ENTER A DIFFERENT NAME THAN THE ORIGINAL !!! OTHERWISE YOU WILL OVER-WRITE THE ORIGINAL AND IF IT HAS NOT WORKED CORRECTLY THEN YOU WILL NOT BE HAPPY. I tend to use the name ‘OriginalName_Fixed.AVI’.

16. Click Save, and keep your fingers crossed! After about 30 minutes or so you should now have a AVI file 3 times the size of the original. If you have a file 10+ times the size of the original then you have not done it right (you have not selected Direct Stream Copy in step 14). If you have a file the same size as the original then the audio was not uncompressed. Check what you done and try again.

17. All you need to do now is check the new fixed AVI file, and burn it to DVD. Check the file all the way through and ensure that it is still ‘in-sync’ at the end of the movie before you burn it to DVD (Author and encode it in DVD format, you know what i mean).

18. When burning to DVD I usually set the audio to Stereo (from the video menu). But I don’t think this is necessary.

Good Luck and Happy burning.

P.S. I have seen some blogs on VCD going out of Sync. I don’t know, but I would suggest trying this to fix those problems too.

Nice explanation, PenPal. However, if you had read earlier in thread I covered the same process using VirtualDub Mod with links to the guide. (Same process, slightly fewer steps)

Looking at orig date of this thread. Bit dated to be responding. However, will consider pinning the post for future reference. wink.gif

Thanks cool.gif
PenPal1999
Sorry Mischcabob,

Point taken, and now I have read the full thread, you have sorted out a problem I had with subtitles!

Cheers cool.gif

Hi all, i know its rather late to be bringing back this post again but its most relevant to my problem!!

I've followed the guide posted and it works a treat!!

Only 1 thing that i don't understand is the problem i'm having with virtualdub. I've got 2 files in PARTICULAR that virtualdub gives me an error on!

After i've loaded the file, the screens in virtualdub have the following error message in them:

WARNING: NOTHING TO OUTPUT BFRAME DECODER LAG

I don't know wat this means! I thought perhaps the audio was different as compared to the rest of the files so i used AVICODEC to check the file info and this file is no different from any of the others!

I also noticed that when i tried to go AUDIO-WAV AUDIO it was giving an error message but now that i'm trying it so i can see the message its not doing the error anymore!! However the BFRAME ERROR message is still there after completing all the steps.

Oh and yes the files do work on my pc and even in the dvd plyer its just the sound is out of sync.....
Matt
I've followed penpals instructions to the letter 4 times but I still have very bad audio sync when burning with Nero. Interestingly I only just started burning DVD's from avi files, initially I didn't have any problems at all, I must have burnt 8 or 9 DVD's without any problems, in the last few days though I have tried approximately 10 times without any success at all. I'm using a Pentium iv 3ghz with 1gb RAM.
TheChozeLa
i saw this problem a few times on other forum! (srry i dont know how to solv it!)
but i was wondering if it was not simply a nero bug??
some of you should try with an other soft!(winavi, super dvd creator 8....)
Mischcabob
Yes known issues especially with XVID encoded movies... hence the BFRAME error.
I get around it by demuxing audio and decoding to uncompressed WAV. I muliplex/encode using MainConcept or CinemaCraft Encoder. If needed I can set the delay in encoder or when I use TMPGEnc DVD author to author DVD.

Hope that helps you a bit. wink.gif

hey guys,
i'm experiencing some problems with sound out of sync also. i've converted many avi files to dvd without any sync problems but only a few are out of sync (at the end of the movie). avi files that i converted had ac3 audio and xvid compression. there doesn't seem to be any sync problems with the original files. the tools that i use include VirtualDubMod (joining avi files and ripping ac3 audio), TMPGenc Plus (converting to m2v), TMPenc DVD Author and Nero 6. i have installed ac3 filter, xvid codec and divx bundle. any ideas what could be causing the trouble?
TheChozeLa
nero6 probably try nero7!!

Ok I Googled my way to this forum and joined. I followed the instructions above to separate the wav file and the save the avi file. So far so good. I previewed the file on various programs including Windows Media Player and Nero Showtime and it was perfect. After opening Nero Vision Express and inserting the file to be burned to dvd, I checked the preview only to find that the video is choppy (both video and audio). I am a little confused as I followed the instructions above to the letter. Any ideas how to proceed? By the way, the Nero digital serial number solution does not work for me. Thanks guys!

Sorry I put the wrong one down All

Was rushed when I made the post My sincere apologies.

the file was suppose to be:
ACE Mega CodecS Pack 6.03 - Professional Edition

I had installed many codec's to try to make it work and got confused which one it was.

I downloaded it here.
free-codecs.com

It sets up a media player and some preferance setting abilities
This will fix it but you must run the video avi in Nero first before burning

some setting link will appear in your task bar that automaticly links the codec.

It's what worked for me. I don't know how but it fixed it.

burned 2 good DVDs so far.

At first I put down that I installed the (Codec_Pack_All_in_1) actually I tried several.
But Codec_Pack_All_in_1 was my previous installed codec pack.

I forgot I uninstalled that and put in (ACE Mega CodecS Pack 6.03 - Professional Edition) last.

This was the one that fixed the out of sync problem. I didn't have to do any editing or anything.

It ran some program with the nero that fixed the problem. How I don't know, but it worked.

Just remember when Nero asks at the end before you burn the DVD that you want it in pal or ntsc the one that you use. In Canada we use NTSC. It worked great

I did not adjust any settings at all it just fixed it. I did notice a greeen arrow on the task bar as I ran Nero so I assume it must link with it somehow. but it fixed the problem.

I was having problems with some divx files being out of sync with audio.I was just messing around and found that Cucusoft AVI to VCD DVD MPEG Converter Pro and Cucusoft MPEG to DVD Author sorted my problem out.if it does for you all well and good.
