im using Windows XP (SP2) and a Dell Dimension 8400.

i decided to back up my favourites and i copied "Favourites" from C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Favourites
and pasted it into C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\My Documents\New Folder\Favourites.

i dunno why, but for some strange reason, the Favourites that being used, is the on that is in My Documents instead of the one in Documents and Settings\<Username>

May i know what i can do to correct this error?

The "My Documents" folder is a special folder to Windows, and is tracked separately by some deep Windows code. I can imagine that that is why Windows recognizes the importation and presence of the "Favorites" folder and treats it as the primary Favorites (possibly through some registry setting).

What follows is a story, by an old man sitting at a campfire, not a technical experts opinion. It is one possible explanation why "Favorites" were not included in "My Documents" in the default setup for users in Windows XP.

In versions prior to XP (I do not know whether this is still true in XP) this special treatment of MD ("My Documents")sometimes caused troubles of various kinds, because though those special tracking and management features were implemented they were not fully supported by updating the code as Windows changed. Instead of being a favorite child, "My Documents" was a neglected one.

But the special tracking features still existed, and as the size of the MD folder grew, it started dragging the system's ability to function down, through such things as very slow Windows Explorer actions, especially such things as deletes and renames of files.

I can speculate that in XP the default location for "Favorites" was outside the Windows "My Documents" folder so that it would not be affected by, or perhaps would not contribute to this kind of problem behavior by MD.

A more likely explanation is that an intimate association of Favorites with Internet Explorer, which is required by court decree to be separated from Windows, made it necessary to separate "Favorites" from the special Windows folder management features associated with "My Documents" in the default setup. The analogy to family dynamics is getting more tiresome than strained here, so I will leave that one to your imagination.

The cure may be to remove the folder from My Documents for this user, and place it in a more suitable backup location. If that does not break the association in Win XP with this folder, you may have to copy it back to its original (default) location.

Of course, you'll have to select which of your two "Favorites" folders you want Windows to recognize, if they are now different, or else use folder synchronization software to make them identical.

There is an easy way to backup your favorites:
(Other browsers may differ)

1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Go to file menu... Import and Export..
3. Click Next
4. Export Favorites
5. Click the source folder(s)
6. Browse to where you want to save the htm file.
(preferably on a different partition or external media)

*Makes it easy so you can use other browsers
like FIREFOX then just matter of importing your bookmarks so they are the same on both browsers.
