This is probably the best place to start:

http://www.linux.org/

If you want free linux distributions, the best 3 I know of are:

Fedora Core:
http://fedora.redhat.com/

Open SUSE
http://www.opensuse.org/

Mandriva (formerly Mandrake)
http://www1.mandrivalinux.com/en-us/

the best beginner's version is probably open SUSE. (You may want to note that if you want to dual-boot with Windows and Linux on the same computer I advise against it, because it's very likely to not work, especially if you don't know what you are doing, like me for example)

Actually you mightt want to try SuSe Professional 9.3(Currently)... it now has free .isos for download and you can order some CDs from anyone of the many Linux CD ordering sites.
