VP6-Codec / ON2 says this:
QUOTE
TrueMotion VP6 Personal Use Codec
Thank you for your interest in VP6. The Personal Use codec product has been discontinued. To purchase On2 encoding products, please visit our online store.

License Agreement of 3ivx says this:

QUOTE
3. Product, Permitted Uses and Other Restrictions. The 3ivx Software developed by 3ivx Technologies Pty. Ltd. consists of a number of encoder/decoder plug-ins for several operating systems for compressing and decompressing moving images/related audio and multimedia objects ("Video") to the 3ivx data format ("3ivx-files"). The plug-in you are downloading for this specific operating system is "FOR TEST USE ONLY". This conditional and non-exclusive License is ONLY VALID for the purpose of the installing, preparing, compressing, decompressing, storage and displaying 3ivx-files on your PERSONAL COMPUTER for TESTING PURPOSES ONLY. This License is NOT VALID for the displaying on your PERSONAL WEB SITE(S).

I wouldn't call such conditions as "free".

Dear otomo, at the beginning all codecs and tools (100-150 items) were free. Now we have over 300 codecs and tools and 70% are free. Unfortunally, we can't list only freeware software. Why?

1. Because many people can/want to spend money on software and they are asking to list the best programs (freeware or shareware, no matter what)
2. There are many reliable programs and we should encourage the developers promoting and buying them.
3. Almost all freeware codecs were listed. The offer is limited and we can't stop here. We have to add fresh content daily because we're living from advertising. We can't pay the servers if our site has no visitors.

Yes, we're thinking to change the name of site but this isn't our priority, at least for now. wink.gif

Did you try VP6 Video Codec? This is an old version.

See also, freeware alternatives: FFDShow MPEG-4, XviD binaries ( Koepi's XviD, Nic's XviD) and so on.

ok. I understand that. But then the name of the site is a bit misleading. I came to the site because I was looking for free codecs.

Maybe you can just make it more clear which codec is really free and which one not.

Hmm... shareware is still free (just limited to 30 days) so not really misleading. Also, clearly says on "last update line" whether it is freeware or shareware.

Besides, registering the domain "mostly_freeware_with_some_shareware_so_not really_free-codecs.com" wouldn't fly very well. rolleyes.gif

SORRY for any confusion but as the name says FREE codecs there are free codecs on the site besides it is not like we have control over wether or not they are free sorry again for any confusion.

I definitively support Mischabob's idea! I like that name:
mostly_freeware_with_some_shareware_so_not really_free-codecs.com tongue.gif

So let's register the domain. I thinks it's still FREE biggrin.gif

Im glad, that I found this site. Everyday there are more codecs and related tools appearing. I got all the codecs I need......for free, here on this site. Using shareware to me is a good thing, people can test the codecs or tools before purchasing them. Besides, where do you get so much help for your pc problems?
The members here and especially the moderators really helped me a lot......for free!!! Dont think theres a better place in the net in this category. No need to criticize.

Not even the death is free, it costs the life.

does anyone remember seeing a replacement codec from free-codecs.com which will play VR .mov files? I am trying to get rid of Quicktime Player but we need to view VR movies.
