Yes, I read it from their blog on August 23:

QUOTE
In an effort to gain a bigger foothold in the desktop market, Opera will announce an alternative business model for its desktop browser.
Opera's main strength is in the mobile browser where it saw a profit in the last fiscal quarter. The desktop browser revenue, however, was down from last year.
One Opera employee said that the place is buzzing in Opera (the company) over this announcement. "You have something good to look forward to".
There is a lot of speculation as to what this announcement entails.
Could it be that Opera will remove its advertisements from the browser in an effort gain a greater foothold in other markets which are much more profitable?
I don't want to over analyze this, but at a recent shareholders meeting the CEO of Opera said in reference to the desktop browser "we are finding ways to monetize our user base a lot better than before, but licensing revenue is not part of that." Is he implying that licensing revenue is not in the future of the desktop browser (i.e. it would remove the ads from the browser)?
Until version 5, Opera didn't have a free version of its desktop browser. In the year 2000, however, it introduced the free version with ads.

*I doubt it will make any dent in market share though. wink.gif

Mischcabob, i wouldn't be so pessimistic...

The ad-free version of Opera 8 was downloaded more than 1 million times in the first two days of availability... ohmy.gif

I think this is a smart move, many Firefox kiddies will switch to Opera smile.gif

Just being realistic. Despite the millions of free downloads of alternative browsers (with Firefox leading the pack),
I.E. still has over 91% of the marketshare.

In my experience, most people that switch will still use it as a secondary or backup browser.
P.S. I got nothing against Opera. It's a great browser. cool.gif

I don't quite get why IE has such a monopoly on the market. I mean, ever since I switched to deepnet and firefox I have had no browser hacks. Ahhh, I remember the good old days of IE, and how all of a sudden it would be taken by an alien force and strange things would happen unexpectedly, like the browser would stop working, only take me to a single site, probably the site that hacked it. And the new pop-up blocker they installed didn't really block much at all. So I'm not getting why people still use IE ?

Oh wait, that's the definition of monopoly, everyone uses it for no reason ? blink.gif ohmy.gif unsure.gif huh.gif

Cool. cool.gif I "may" change my permanent browser to Opera. I have herd of it before , and i herd its not that good. Now that it has no ads it may actually be a good browser. I've read some bad things about, but i'll check it out. biggrin.gif Thanks for the post. biggrin.gif

...so they can keep "sticking it to Microsoft!"... despite the fact that they are still using Windows. blink.gif

I must say that this move by Opera Software reminds me of when Netscape Communications decided to stop charging (corporations) for use of their then current Netscape Communicator v4.

Not long after that AOL took them over...

I just installed opera, and it seems to be just as fast as firefox (with firetune) is, so that's good. If you don't like firefox then use opera instead, but whatever you do ... do not use IE (unless you really really have to on a special occasion) biggrin.gif
