there is a new fraunhofer command line mp3 encoder available at
http://www.all4mp3.com/tools/sw_fhg_cl.htmlI gave it a try and found that it is 5x faster than my LAME encoder, and the file it created sounds just as good. Is it possible that Fraunhofer has a better mp3 encoder than LAME?
Why not? As I recall, and you can visit the LAME site to check this, LAME never planned on being the end of all MP3 encoding, just to provide an open source alternative. That they have become a default standard is a credit to open source, but it does not mean that a specialized commercial organization cannot create good and even better products.
But I'm trying to remember things I read long ago. Check it out.
