Hey guys... I have a problme that I'm hoping you can help with...

I was trying to play a recently downloaded movie file (in avi format) and it doesn't have any sound!.. I tried opening it with all my players and all have the same problem.

I tried burning it and then playing it on my laptop and that worked WITH sound!

So I've tried to download some audio codecs' (the codec I was missing was "55") and everything has been installed and I even reinstalled WMP but it STILL won't play the file!

It's strange cause it works on my laptop and not on my desktop.... Does anyone know what the problem is?

If more info is needed please let me know - I'm checking this site a few times a day...Thanks in advance!

Hi!

Have you checked the Audio Format Tags page at Free-Codecs.com?

- Audio Codec Tag 55 may be requested when Fraunhofer MPEG Layer-3 Audio Decoder is missing.

Yeah I've seen and downloaded Fraunhofer and when I installed it said that everything should be working but it didn't help.

Format tag 55 error? Possible MP3 decoder is broken on your desktop.
Try this:

First, Goto Start>>Run>>Type regsvr32.exe l3codeca.acm, Hit Enter.  You are looking for this to say that it succeeded.  Now, try and play your file again in WMP.  If it works, great!  If not, read on.

Goto C:\Windows\System32\l3codeca.acm and rename the file to l3codeca.bak.  Then open WMP and go to Help>>Check for Updates.  This will re-download the decoder and place a new copy on your system.  It should be registered and ready to go at this point, but you can also run regsvr32.exe l3codeca.acm again just be sure.  That command registers the ACM decoder with Windows, many “Codec Packs“ will screw up your ACM Registration, running the command should set it right again.

If WMP fails to re-download it you can get the files off of your Windows XP CD-ROM.  To do this first insert your Windows CD-ROM.  Now goto C:\Windows\System32 and find l3codeca.acm and l3codecx.ax.  Rename both of this to .OLD.  Now goto Start>>Run>>Type Expand G:\I386\l3codeca.ac_ C:\Windows\System32\l3codeca.acm, Hit Enter.  Now do the same thing, but Type Expand G:\I386\L3CODECX.AX_ C:\Windows\System32\l3codecx.ax, Hit Enter.

*Also, consider upgrading to WMP10 and getting latest updates/patches if you haven't done so. wink.gif

Okay all the series I've downloaded AFTER I got the problem don't have any sound either.... All the video files that were on my computer before are still working though!

And like I said I tried burning it and playing the CD on my laptop and that worked fine so there is something wrong with my computer...

I took some screencaps of AVIcodec of a file that doesn't work and on a file that does - both said that the sound codec WAS supported:

The file that doesn't have sound:

The file that DOES have sound:

Also I tried right-clicking the file in WMP and clicking properties and screencapped that as well.

The file that doesn't work:

The file that DOES work:

As you can see it doesn't say anything about the audiocodec even though AVIcodc confirmed that it had everything it needed... Is there someway I can manually choose the codec for each file or something?

I did the "regsvr32.exe l3codeca.acm" thing and it said that it succeeded.... But the file still won't play with sound..

It's really strange though cause I didn't have this problem a week ago... Can't go back and change something? (I tried system restore with no luck though)

EDIT:
Btw can't I just copy the files from my laptop isntead of the XP-CDrom? They were both installed with the same cd-rom so the files are the same... So if I follow the steps and I rename them .old _ can't I just copy the files from my laptop over to my system32 folder on my desktop?

If you have installed WMP 10 on WINXP you will see l3codecp.acm (SYSTEM 32), check the version on this file. It should read 3.3.0.44. If it reads version 1.2.0.63 then its not a good one, its pirated.

Hopefully you don't have codec packs installed which might be causing conflict. Installing WMP10 along with updated sound card drivers usually will have Mpeg-layer audio support. cool.gif

BTW, the screenshot you posted, don't necessariliy mean the codecs are installed or working properly on system. Just identifies what the file uses. wink.gif

My desktop reads 1.2.0.63, but my laptop reads 3.3.0.44 - but they were both installed with the same XP cdrom and both have WMP10 installed.

Well, same WinXP CD, same WMP10(?) strange...
But load the file to GSpot, click 'Render' and see the results. If it renders succesfully it means DirectShow is able to play the file so then probably there's something wrong with WMP10 and its codec handling..
Also verify your installed codecs in GSpot, whether this MPEG Layer-3 audio codec is broken or not.

If nothing else works, you may still use FFDShow to decode MPEG Layer-3.
Just set MP3 after installation to mp3lib or libmad.
(access: Start Menu: FFDShow -> Audio filter configuration/Codecs)
