Hello there everyone,

following problem:
I can't watch any of my media files anymore, be they .mpeg, .avi...whatever. whenever I try to load a movie with any player, my sytem begins to freeze (processor activity going to 99% for the player used), I only see a black screen and the sound also stops from time to time.
I already tried fixing this by following the Sticky "Guide to using codecs" but still nothing. Before this I also reinstalled my system...
Gspot also tells me that all necessary codecs are installed, but still the picture can't be rendered...

System specs:
Athlon 1700+
512 Mb Ram
Mainboard Asus A7V8V
GeForce 6600Gt

Drivers are Nvidia Forceware 7.8.0.1 and DirectX 9.0c

I tried opening my files with the media player coming with Knoppix Live, and under Linux they work though also a bit jerky.

I really hope now that someone here has an idea how to fix this, because I am out of ideas now...

More of a Windows issue. There is issue trying to read large AVi and other media files esp. if file header is corrupt or file is damaged. Supposedly fixed with SP1.

Got latest updates? Also try these fixes outlined in this thread:

Thought so, but I was still out of ideas. biggrin.gif

I'm gonna have a look at it, although, the version of XP I am running should have SP2 included.

Thanks for the tip.

Can be several things that has been covered before in other threads.

Corrupt system files and drivers, older drivers, corrupt applications, viruses, trojans, worms and insufficient RAM can cause CPU usage to go high. Windows has issues If using long filenames and/or illegal characters in filename as well. May want to narrow it down a bit. wink.gif

Ok, here's a little update concerning my problem:

1. I have the SP2 installed. (And took care of updating my system, where it wasn't the latest version)
2. I checked one file for a corrupt header (it was okay) and tried to play it.

==> same problem, doesn't work

3. I removed the .avi-handlers you mentioned in your reply from the registry and tried to play the checked file mentioned above.

==> doesn't work

All files, except .wmv-files for obvious reasons work with the xine player under linux. But as I don't want to switch systems all the time, I hope for another solution.

On ocasion I have same problem..but always trace back to incomplete media file/invalid header.
But this prob can be many things like I said in other thread.

You can try rollback or use another display driver (I'm using 81.84 forceware drivers with my 6600 card).
Also, uninstall any codec packs and just install the bare minimum. Also, I always recommend matching a Mobo with nvidia chipset with nvidia geforce card to reduce chance of incompatibilities. You have a VIA KT400 I believe so wouldn't be surprised if there's a conflict. Try updating chipset drivers to see if that helps. wink.gif
