So who is better? i predict that it will be 50% AMD 50% Intel tongue.gif
VaskoSoftware
You made some mistakes in ur poll. Its Athlon, not Athelon (or mabe Athelon is something new???) also u did not include quite a few other proccessors.

Give him a break. We know he meant Athlon. rolleyes.gif

Yes, he could have added Cyrix, PowerPC (IBM), Via, Motorola, HP, Siemens AND MANY MORE. Best just focus on desktop computer chips though.

I would add IBM PowerPC (Apple) as excellent candidate though.
Anyway, my bet is on AMD Athlon particularly their branded Athlon 64/FX/Opteron class of CPUs.
chp
Yeah these are the most popular....and i voted for Intel.

And Athelon is Athlon tongue.gif
i want an Athelon please.gif biggrin.gif
Speed-Addict
Spelling error give me a break, as for all the other processors , if i was to list every single one for every single utility I would fall asleep, i listed the most popular ones for desktop pcs. as for IBM its not there because its crap tongue.gif but ok ill add it
euromix
Athlon for desktop systems and (dual) Xeon for servers friends.gif

Crap??? blink.gif Obviously not familiar with Apple PowerPC G5 computers that are powered by IBM’s 64-bit POWER series processors. Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 systems are quite a marvel with 1.25Ghz FSB and staggering 20GBps of throughput. Only thing that comes close to it in performance is Athlon 64 FX/Opteron class of chips.

IBM sux.. end of story rolleyes.gif

Nice rebuttal. What are you ten years old or something? rofl.gif
Sorry, couldn't resist laugh.gif

My knowledge on hardware isnt that good crying.gif but ive had Athlons in all of my machines and the seem to do the job nicely smile.gif , thats all i care bout tongue.gif

Im not 10.... *hides his toys*

Sorry. There were just quite a few u missed, that i PERSONALLY found quite important.

About the spelling error:
U must agree, it is important to accept your mistakes, but oh well. Im sorry i pointed out your mistake? i guess?

I think you just listed the ones you knew, not the ones you wanted to list. If you knew better, you would have listed some of the handheld CPUs, or even... nevermind...

When i was helping my friends set up their server, we purchased AMD Opteron.

Intel Celeron sux, since it burned down on me, like the 4th day the machine was on, Pentium seems to do the job.

Not long ago, i was still powered by VIA Cyrix... 3 i think it was. But i gave that PC to a friend of mine. I never actually saw Itanium in use, is it equivalent to pentium 4, or is it weaker?

Definately missed a few processors ... but this is not real techie forum anyway wink.gif

Intel Celeron, AMD duron definately would count as value low-end processors. I had a AMD duron 600 for a few years... ran a tad hot, but still beat comparable Celeron anyday. cool.gif

Itanium 2 is Intel's overpriced server platform... Wouldn't compare to P4 since there built for multi/dual processor server applications for running databases, technical computing, supply chain management, etc.

Personally, I like the AMD Opteron 2 or 4-way processor with its backward 32-64bit compatibility and higher throughput. wink.gif

I still have a duron (dont know which one) 770 mgz... never got to use it =)

Ha... passed on my Duron to my parents 2 years ago when I built their system.
Sorry, my geekiness is starting to shine through. I will try to restrain myself rofl.gif

I like Athlons.... They get me bye

P.S. I got a laugh out of this topic tongue.gif rofl.gif

I quick salutation to you esp after noticing that our tastes now coincide in other areas, as well, AMD Athlon 3500+ and FX55 on A8N-SLI Deluxe with 2 Gb split into A1 and B1 Dual. I see there are only 2 votes on the Athlon, like the NOD32 vote. (I have a small fav to pass on to you personally for Intrusion Detection - PrevX) but you prob know that..

All the best

Nice to have a fellow knowledgeable techie on board. You got a nice system.
Just upgraded few weeks ago to Athlon 64 3000+ w/GA-K8NF-9 mobo, 1GB dual channel DDR RAM.
(Would have got the ASUS A8N-E personally, but were out of stock.)

Cheers cool.gif

Intel is da best, its da rock of processor developers. But da latest AMD processors are good 2 biggrin.gif

We should not 4get da HT extreme processors of intel wink.gif I vote with Intel tongue.gif
Winter_Lion
After my vote it was dead even between Intel and AMD,......... 46.67 percent each.

I would have guessed AMD would have trounced, and I would have been wrong. lol.

How can I forget, that's what is running my current desktop. Good cpu, sweet chipset. But still just a cobbled answer to future needs, I am afraid. It carries a 2meg cache, but not as an intergrated part of the processor, but as L2 addon. That makes for a bottleneck between the two that AMD doesn't have.

Still and all, it runs fast, cool and without complaint. HT engaged or not. Dual core will be handy for XP64 OS, I imagine.

REal late to the show:{ Athlon for sure, in terms of there efficiency, they blow away Intel, what is it, something like 90 watts versus 120 put out by the Intel. Alot of waste. The AMD also overclocks like crazy without exotic cooling solutions. The intel celeron is pretty good chip and I use them to make nice quit home theatre systems, big cache helps there. Though even at the extreme end, the FX series etc, and now the dual cores, well, check the specs as well as the real world results. The Intels just don't have it anymore. AMD forced Intel to rush their duals to mamrket, and AMD had the 64's out first as well. Intel has a real battle on their hands, and they aren't doing so well.

Been using AMD since '95, the price point just can't be beat.
My system is three years old (new one the way this month :} )and still quit quick, quick enough that I could sell it as new.
AMD 3500+ oc to 2508 with a gig of corsairs running full speed, just air cooled. Been running like that since about the first week.

later!
