Hi. I can't seem to find a solution to this problem.

Whenever I try to convert any file in WinAviVideoConverter it returns "Can't decode this file! may be the file is broken or system not install the decoder !" in a little pop up window.

This is totally insane...I have the full KLite codec pack installed. I checked it with Sherlock2.0 from this site, and it confirms that my codecs are installed OK. I can play any of the failed files in my Media Player. I've tried reinstalling my codecs, and reinstalling WinAvi, but neither has solved the problem. I also tried removing any references in the registry to "WinAvi" or "ZJSoft" before reinstalling, and manually removed any directories and files left behind. I've rebooted between installs. I've even tried reinstalling WinAvi under safe mode, just to make sure it wasn't some exotic conflict...no luck.

I used to be able to convert files fine, but I ran an application called the PC Pitstop Optimizer on my computer; ever since then this problem has recurred. Still, this doesn't make any sense to me. All these pieces of software should have re-registered when I re-installed, so why isn't it working?

I really hope someone here can help me, because I like this program, but I I've done everything I can think of to fix it. Thanks in advance to any responses I get.

C'mon guys...no advice at all? I'm certain you guys understand how applications interface with codecs more clearly than I do. There must be some way to repair this damage.

I'm also realizing I didn't put up my environment info. I'm running Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4.

I'll even accept inconvenient/improbable solutions at this point. I just want the software to work as it did a few days ago. Thanks again!

Well pardon us for not coming to your beckoning call. rolleyes.gif

You failed to mention what file format you trying to convert.
Make sure you using the latest WINAVI converter 7.1. Also, should have Real media and Quicktime Alternative installed properly if you are trying to convert those formats.

Thank you for your response. I'm sorry if I seemed impatient...I actually am a fairly impatient person, but I shouldn't make that your problem! tongue.gif

It happens with any mpeg or avi I load. It happens with every file, at least all that I have tried. I've only tried to convert to .avi or .wmv. Again, if you reread my initial post, it's not that I don't understand how codecs work, or how to use the software. Indeed, I had already used it to do several coversions. It was after I ran an "optimizer" program that this trouble began. Since then, I've restored a backup of my initial settings through the optimizer software (but your guess is as good as mine as to how reliable this is), reinstalled K-Lite Full, and reinstalled WinAvi (yes, 7.1, both the version from free codecs and from WinAvi's own site...I'm not sure which is more recent, but the install executables have different file sizes from the two sites; neither works).

So, yeah, I'm pretty stumped. And kinda screwed...I really liked the speed and functionality of this software, and I'm not sure how to repair the damage done to my system. Anyway, thanks for your help, and if you have any ideas, even something that you're not sure about that I can try next, I'll do it and let you know. I'm sure I'm not the first person to have this problem (in fact, I've seen several people on Dutch language sites with the same error message) so I'd like to find a way to fix it. I've sent an e-mail to the support address with the software, so hopefully the developers might have an idea or at least be willing to follow-through with me to reproduce this problem for their QA. I'll keep you posted on any developments on my end.

Oh, and it's "beck and call", not "beckoning call". If you're gonna be snarky, make sure you do it right. thumbsup.gif

Ah, sematics. Yes, I should have used the idiom "beck and call", but beckoning is a word too.
Look it up in the dictionary. wink.gif

Anyway, i suggest you rollback system before this "optimizer" program did the damage.
I am running registered version of WINAVI converter 7.1 and it seems to work fine on RVMB-> DVD conversion I tested, but every computer configuration is different.
Hopefully you get a response back from support. Good luck! thumbsup.gif
