I just installed Media Player Classic on my computer (Win XP Pro SP2) but every time I click on a video link on the internet I get the following message:

"The file you are downloading can not be opened by the default program. The file is either corrupted or has an incorrect file type..."

Apparently this is a configuration issue, as other players WILL open the file without incident (WMP10, VLC, Core, etc). I have all the file extensions checked in the player's settings, yet still no dice.

MPC's help file is not very helpful, so I turn this over to the more advanced and intelligent users among you.

MPC does require codecs like Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative to play certain formats.
It might help what type of streaming format you are trying to play.

I've been trying to play all kinds of files, but mostly WMVs and MPEGs. I have all the major Codecs (use ACE Mega Codec Pack Professional).

I found something on another website that said MPC should be replaced in the WINNT/System32 folder as well as the Windows Media Player folder, but this is very hard to do (at least in SP2), as Windows replaces their files immediately after one deletes them.

That method didn't even work when I renamed the MPC files to look like their WMV counterparts. Windows was still able to reassert the old files.

I'm sure others are successfully using Media Player Classic as their default, on-demand player for internet linked files.

I'm hoping a few of you will share your install and/or configuration knowledge on this forum, as I know others are struggling with this same issue.

Shouldn't be that complicated. Typically I install MPC which is bundled with K-lite codec Pack or REal/Quicktime Alternative. MPC is separate entity..nothing to do with WMP so wouldn't touch that folder. Installing all those codecs with ACE pro pack is likely causing probs.

I suggest you uninstall and do a custom install of codecs for only the ones you need. Make sure you have latest directshow and windows media codecs. All you need is FFdshow, XVID or DIVX, windows media codecs, real, quicktime and MPEG 1/2 decoders for the most part to play most files. Once MPC is installed, you can configure formats and associations for playing files.

BTW, Halloween as we call it, wrapped up a couple days ago in North America.

All Saints Day is November 1
All Souls Day is November 2

In Spanish communities, or places where Spanish culture has a strong influence, All Souls Day is called "The Day of The Dead" (El Dia del Muerto) and is marked with parades and festivals to honor relatives and friends that have passed on to the other side of the veil.

But if you prefer a "pagan" notation (Christianity is as pagan as any other religion), then I will simply say

"Happy Woden's Day!" (Wednesday=Woden or Wotan or Odin=represents the planet Mercury)

I just heard about it from my friend in VeraCruz, but he failed to mention that it was a different day then Halloween.
