Working with DVD files is very similar to working with CAD. Meaning it takes lots of horse-(CPU)-power.

Even with a top-of-the-line AlienWare, Falcon Northwest, VooDoo, etc, it takes a while. It will take a little longer with a 1998 Celeron-powered eMachine (I ought to know, I have one).

So how much horse-power do you have (at least some system specs)?

Well ripping a DVD should take only 10-20 min unless it has problems reading/descrambling DVD protection.
DVD Decrypter works well: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/DVD_Decrypter.htm

If you are talking about encoding then yes it will take several hours. Even with my old Athlon XP 1600+, it only took me 3-4 hours. wink.gif

I have had the same experience my friend. Ripping is just another word for copying the files from the optical drive. But if you asked the program to encode to mpeg extension for ease of viewing on your pc, it could take hours.

Even with my extreme gamer's pc, it takes a while to encode video files, quite a while. What I do is set it up to run after I go to bed and with some apps., you can even have it turn off the pc when its done.

btw: If multimedia is your intended major, you need another quarter gig of ram. You will never regret the expense when you find out how much it speeds up such chores.

Try a prog called DVD shrink. it takes me less than an to rip and shrink a duel layer dvd to a single layer and burn it again (burning at 4x). if you want the video file, try auto gordian knot i have had alot of good luck with this program, i use it for ripping dvd's and encoding them down in quality and frame size so i can make high quality .3gp files to play on my cell phone (right now i have the whole movie of office space on my mot V710) auto gordian knot is a decent prog and should rip it very quickly and then convert it in a decent amount of time

i would also suggest just trying diff progz, not all programs will work the same for everyone, some work better for me than for others and vice versa. you may also consider getting a faster optical drive, because it will help to speed up the ripping time
