I'm pretty clueless about this stuff. So please help. I've been trying to edit a movie that is in XviD format. I already have the XviD codec; it plays okay on Windows Media Player. I was just wondering what kind of codec do I need in order to edit the movie? Thanks guys!

You don't need a codec to edit a movie. You need a movie editor.

Depending on how much you want to do, and you already have windowsXP, you already have a movie editor. It's called movie maker.

If you haven't cleaned out your start menu, it can be found there. It does a good job, and it's simple and not to hard to use.

The only thing that you may not like is that you can't choose what codec to save the movie with. It uses it's own. So all movies saved are .wmv. You can choose the quilty, but not the codec.

If that becomes a sticking point for you after you have tried movie maker then you will have to pay for another movie editor. Since they cost so much, I haven't really used another one, but they look a lot more complecated.

Actually, I have been using Movie Maker, but every time I try to upload a XviD movie, it says I need a codec. So I don't know? Does it work for you when you upload a XviD file?

Sorry for the late reply, I missed the e-mail notifcation. dry.gif

Like most MS products it doesn't like using formats that MS didn't come up with. If there was a movie file that I wanted to edit, and it wasn't avi or wmv I would have to convert it first.

At one point I thought that it took a file that I didn't think it would take after I installed the latest K-lite codec pack.

But you said that you already have that codec installed that plays the movie.

Finding the software that is best for you and your computer for converting files will have to be up to you.

I did hear that MS has a WMV encoder out there. But I haven't had a chance to see if it would work on such a file. I started using it not that long ago for something else, but it's worth a try.

Like I said before, you may have to get another video editor to be able to edit the file that you have.

Now that I have re-read what you said about it asking for a codec, try installing a codec pack. K-lite being the choice of the masses, and see if loads it then. blush.gif

You have updated to SP2 for your XP right?
