Hi, does anyone know where I can download wmv codecs? I recently uninstalled Windows Media Player 10 using XPlite program and now my computer won't play .wmv files at all. I tried to redownload and install WMP10 from Microsoft website but it says that the program version is incompatible with my Windows version. So I could not reinstall WMP10 at all. Can anyone point out to where I can obtain wmv codes? I tried searching in this site but found none. All I want is be able to open and play wmv files.

of course not, i can't understand why use winamp to play vidoe files? I prefer mplayer or mpc better.

I'm trying to use Media Player Classic to play wmv files. So is there a codec package I can install to play wmv files? I tried K Lite Mega Codec Pack but no luck still. Thanks.

it's strange. a wmv file should run without any extra codec

you may try to install windows media player 9 series to see if it comes to fix this

but i prefer to use winamp rather than windows media player

you could install XP codec pack.

this pack, during its installation, asks for the codec types you want.

WM codecs are installed with the installation of your WMPlayer. Being that I know that XP SP2 comes with at least WMPlayer 8 I suspect that when theWMPlayer 10 was uninstalled, the codecs went with it.

Seeing as WMPlayer10 won't install try version 9. This comes with the 9series codecs, which are almost identical to the codec series that comes with WMPlayer 10 (these are version 9.1 codecs). Failing that I'd try installing version 10 (or version 9) player through Windows Update.
...Failing that try version 7 player...(I have to say that the WM7 audio codec is very poor though)

You should be able to find the old player versions on the following Windows site page...:

...Failing that make sure that your original player is fully uninstalled and there aren't any remnants lying around and try reinstalling your chosen player again.

...Failing that maybe a OS build might be the most efficient way of solving this. I'd say that was a last resort type of thing (so you may not want to do that).

It is easy to correct this. Go to another XP computer and copy these files from /system32 to your /system32:
wmasf.dll
wmidx.dll
wmvcore.dll

Then extract the files from the M$ Media codec pack to a temp folder which are WMV9VCM.dll and WMV9VCM.inf. Right-click the .inf file and choose install.

Then you can play all M$-type media files in Media Player Classic.
