Hi,

I'm making movie from 3D game. After recording a few demos from game and next playing them i got TGA sequence of frames. Next using VirtualDub assembling it into one AVI file. Repeting this for every demo i have number of movies to make final movie (WMV) in Windows Movie Maker.

The question is: Which codec should i use in VirtualDub?

Saving AVI uncompressed file is huge! Using some codecs like Indeo, Cinepak i can see quality loose is to much. I would like to find codec giving good quality (maybe even loseless?) and not much compression (10-20 times comparing to TGA sequence size). It should work with Windows Movie Maker of course. And it should be freeware.

Ad if codec found the second question: Is there any way to automate this work?
I mean any script for VirtualDub to open TGA sequence, save AVI and finally delete TGA sequence.

Can you help me?

Hi,

Well u can try the XVID codec for making AVI. XVID codec is a freeware & offers lossless quality. Moreover u can set the quantizer in it for quality & compression. XVID can be found easily on the net. Just search through google & u will find the site. Instead of XVID u can give a shot at DIVX 6.1 codec found at www.divx.com

I can't find loseless option in Xvid configuration sad.gif but made some tests with Divx and Xvid. All the time i got unacceptable quality loose. Even if i choose 100% quality factor. However files were small.

But i found HuffYUV 2.1.1 codec. It works excellent however gives big files. It is really looseless codec. And Windows Media Player works fine with these files.

Well, don't know why he got idea that DIVX/XVID are lossless. THEY ARE NOT!
Both are great lossy MPEG4 codecs. Anyway, I would have suggested HUFFYUV or Huffman myself. wink.gif

Nice, it means that i have found what i was looking for. I made some tests last night. Using HUFFYUV i got 480 MB/minute AVI movie with 640x480 (25 fps) perfect quality and good processing file with Windows Movie Maker. Final movie is WMV file 640x480 (25 fps) 16 MB/minute (without sound). And quality is really good!!

Thx a lot Mischcabob
