Hey everyone, as some of you may know, I am developing a game authoring system (in simple words, you can make your own PC Games).

Right now, to test my new lighting system, and as a general task being a part of the authoring system, i am making a world editor, but i would like to call it world assembler.

Basicaly, the task of the program, is to allow YOU (users) to assemble worlds using your geometry, models, sprites, sounds, and lights (sounds limited, but quite enough for a beginning), then configure that world using scripts (program the game logic) and then release the final product.

Now, in order to make an efficient program, i need YOUR opinions. I am going to ask a series of questions (as time goes by, ill add more questions), and i need your answers. The questions arnt hard, so dont worry.

P.S. The questions are mostly to make MY life easier =) But dont think im selfish, im doing this for you (everyone) laugh.gif

Question #1:
If you plan to make virtual worlds, using an editor, would it bother you if it would force you to save the file before you start working on it (such as save blank files)?

Question #2:
If you were to import an external file (think quake 3 bsp file) would you rather convert the map before you import (using one of my converters) or would you rather let the program filter it, and convert it on its own (same thing as a previous choice, but automatically)?

Thanks, that's it for now.
Tim

BTW, if you have any requests (small) as of now, please, post them here, im on a roll cool.gif

Not really a specific software request.

I wonder why nobody would help me crying.gif

Was it something i said? I just want some help with this... everyone, dont tell me you never wanted to create games? I wanted to do so, but could never find the right tools, or anything that would help me, so I am trying to make it easy to make your game.

I am a compelling guy, and I will NEVER settle for anything less then what i like ( I really like half-life 2, and since i already achieved doom 3 graphics, i realize that i dont like it, since it is incompatible/really slow on many video cards, i desided to look for a best game that utilizes almost any video card, and yet shows great effects - once again, HL2)

Please, please, please, its only 2 questions for now.

Thank you.

Don't take it too personal, Vasko. Maybe not the right forum or audience. unsure.gif

Although I have over 40 games (through various means), I'm only a casual gamer. Last game that I played that allowed to edit components of the game was GopherGolf. You could make your own miniature 2D golf course adding greens, bushs, sand traps etc. rofl.gif

Well... sounds like you got your work cut for you. Here are my answers if this will aid you in the development of this world assembler:

1. NOPE. might be good idea to create a saved file at beginning..saved in default game dir...otherwise user may forget later or there unexpected crash
2. maybe have game convert it automaticaly..but letting user know. Perhaps a prompt/warning if file is incompatible.

Hope this helps. biggrin.gif

Ok, thanks. lol, not exactly what i have expected, and i would need to base it on more opinions, but THANK YOU SO MUCH Mischcabob (cant believe im saying this... sounds weird), one reply is better than nothing. The option for the game to convert it is bad, since it's just pointless, if it can be converted b4 that.

Thanks a lot man. These kind of questions dont belong to programming forums, but this is more like a relax/user forum to me, so i thought it might work. I guess not, i wont try it again.

Yes, we are pretty relaxed here. cool.gif Sorry, I was just being honest.. you will have better luck targeting gaming and more technical-orientated forum that gets 1000+ hits per day i.e.http://forums.3dgamers.com
Don't misunderstand... you will get feedback here, but it will take bit longer since this forum is fairly new.

Cheers biggrin.gif

Yes, it could get really annoying if you just start one to show someone something... having to delete so many files that you didn't intend to save in the first place.

I would rather the program convert it automatically.
