I am struggling to get MPC to play ordinary DVD's on my IBM X20 (Win 2000, 600Hz, 320mbRAM). Am I expecting too much ? I have installed MPC (which nearly copes but seems not to be keeping up), BS Player, CS Player, Quicktike Alternative, and Videoloan, none of which play and some of which crash the machine. The only other clue I have is that when I tried Windows Media Player I got a message that I needed to upgrade my driver with Macrovision. Any advice would be welome.

Well you mentioned the players. Did you install a proper MPEG2 or DVD decoder bundled with codec packs or software players?

Well, I asumed that the player would include all that I needed, but I did try installing elecard mpg2, and csplayer, BS Player, RealPlayer. (I should add that all I am trying to do is play pre-recorded DVDs.) Can you recommend a freeware MPEG2 and DVD decoder with codec packs? Thanks for the advice by the way.

Well PIII, 600MHZ computer just barely meets min requirements of running multimedia apps.
So if any other bottlenecks due to poor maintenance of computer will hurt performance.

Well macrovision is copy-protection mechanism when playing commercial DVDs. If using old windows media player, likely won't be able to play DVDs anyway.

K-lite codec packs includes MPEG decoder as well as other packs. However, I suggest you stick with 1 or 2 players and only install what you need. You got too much unneeded codecs/players already that may add conflicts. FFDshow along with MPC (directshow player) will play most formats. wink.gif

Many thanks. I'll try reducing to just Media Player Classic and FFDshow.
