Hey all:

My work computer (Windows 2000) is completely locked down. It won't play half the videos that people send me. Without admin priveleges, I'm obviously unable to update media player.

My question is: Is there an alternate video/media player that either has all the codecs built in, or else a player where you can simply add the video codecs right in the same folder as the main player and have it work? Although I can't install software on the work computer, I can install the software at home, then archive the folder and e-mail to to work.

I hope I've described my situation correctly and understandably. And thanks in advance for any feedback you all might have.

I assume you have "admin" rights on your home computer. Have a friend make a copy of an installed software "program folder" they own and you would like to try. Let me know how well this works.

You can ask the "network admin" at work for permission to install the software. But I will assume they have that option locked down for a reason.

Another solution is "portable" applications. It's a young market, but getting more software all the time.

Portable apps is exactly the term that describes what I'm looking for. I can't just install Media Player 10 in a folder on my home computer and then copy that folder to another computer because the Installer copies files all over the drive and Windows folder. I need a standalone, "portable" media player app that has everything it needs in its own, singular folder. That way I can just copy the folder to whatever computer I need to use it on, without the need for having admin rights to "properly" install the program. (And our admin at work are NOT going to allow updating Media Player.)

Again, thanks for your feedback. You at least got me pointed in the right direction as far as the terminology that I was looking for. Now I just need the application. ;-)

The best all around media player that i have found is VLCMedia player, it's free and it's also in the Portableapps library so It would be easy for you to download it and install it with that.
