hi... when i try to play certain .avi files (usually very recent movies or tv shows) all my players (divx 2.6, xvid, wmp) all play a couple of frames before freezing, but if i skip ahead past the frozen frame, the file plays but stutters SO badly. i have installed divx total pack 2.0, all up-to-date wmp codecs too..... so my question is - does anyone know the codecs to install, or perhaps a new player, so i can be rid of this problem for good?

Did you check the files with GSpot ?

use DivFix to repair it. If not working, the VLC Player should work.
