1. Install MKVToolnix

2. Decompress MKVExtractGUI to MKVToolnix folder

3. Use VirtualDubMOD to merge the audio and video files; you can also add subtitles - in this case don't forget to install VobSub.

I find mkv's to be good quality, multi language and smaller than avi
