Codecs are not a hardware issue. You might be better advised to check other forums - sofware, for instance, to see which forum is most appropriate for handling codec related questions. The best advice I have seen is to avoid codec packs, and get the specific codec for the file you are working with, if at all possible.
I have not found gspot difficult to use. It is useful to determine what Codec is needed to play the file you have downloaded. Open the program, use the upper left window box to navigate to the file you want information about, and the information will be posted when you ok the selection.
Your post is not really clear, but I think that your media player recognized your file as a media file, but indicated it did not have access to the required codec. Unless the player is ahead of Gspot's format coverage, Gspot should support the file format, and report details about what problems - including missing codecs - there are in playing the file. (You did not tell us either the file type/extension, or the media player you are using in your attemps to play it - for shame!)
Gspot does not support all formats though. A new version, scheduled for July release, should increase its coverage significantly
An issue with downloaded files is determining what file type they are - as in .avi, .mpg, .flv, .3gp etc. Gspot will help you with the formats it supports, but not others - such as .3gp & .flv. In these cases I have opened files having no extension with MS Worpad and examined the file header (first few characters of the file) and then done a google search on those characters. The search disclosed that others had done the same thing, and returned useful information about how to play the media files.
To determine what codecs you already have installed, you might want to download and install "Sherlock - the Codec Detective".
