Codecs are not a hardware issue. You might be better advised to check other forums - sofware, for instance, to see which forum is most appropriate for handling codec related questions. The best advice I have seen is to avoid codec packs, and get the specific codec for the file you are working with, if at all possible.

I have not found gspot difficult to use. It is useful to determine what Codec is needed to play the file you have downloaded. Open the program, use the upper left window box to navigate to the file you want information about, and the information will be posted when you ok the selection.

Your post is not really clear, but I think that your media player recognized your file as a media file, but indicated it did not have access to the required codec. Unless the player is ahead of Gspot's format coverage, Gspot should support the file format, and report details about what problems - including missing codecs - there are in playing the file. (You did not tell us either the file type/extension, or the media player you are using in your attemps to play it - for shame!)

Gspot does not support all formats though. A new version, scheduled for July release, should increase its coverage significantly

An issue with downloaded files is determining what file type they are - as in .avi, .mpg, .flv, .3gp etc. Gspot will help you with the formats it supports, but not others - such as .3gp & .flv. In these cases I have opened files having no extension with MS Worpad and examined the file header (first few characters of the file) and then done a google search on those characters. The search disclosed that others had done the same thing, and returned useful information about how to play the media files.

To determine what codecs you already have installed, you might want to download and install "Sherlock - the Codec Detective".

Please download, install, and run Gspot, and report the results, block by block - File; container; User data; audio; video; and/or proposed Codec solutions and tests.

What processor (Pentium 4?), speed(??mhz?), and OS (WinXP?) are you running?

What media player are you using?

H264/x264 is NOT a Codec designation. It is a media type designation. The codec required to play that media type is dependant on environment features Gspot is designed to detect and report. Gspot uses that information to identify the appropriate codec for playing the media. (Remember, it is not advisable to install packs.) You are better off installing the codec you need for the format and player environment, which we hope to get from the Gspot report.

Kind of hard to eeeeliiminate possible sources of problems without basic information.... And answers ginned up without information are worse than useless...

Yes, Jim's right, you should provide more info.

And what codecs have you already installed (you can check it in GSpot or Sherlock).

However, when having the H264/x264 codec missing, I usually suggest install FFDShow (if you are using a DirectShow based player like Media Player Classic or Win. Media Player).
See this post/topic, how to set FFDShow for H264 decoding:

Thanks very much for intervening with that useful information. Let's hope tim16 can use it to resolve his problem.

My unfamiliarity with the ins and outs of media software is what brought me to the forum in the first place, and this is not a hardware issue, so thanks again.

Really! That's just tooo sad.

Look at the bar at the top of the screen, where it reads "Logged in as Sparks"

To the right, find "My Controls" and click on that. (That takes you to "Your Control Panel")

Look to the left column, one heading down to find "Subscriptions".

Click on either "View Topics" or "View forums". Identify the topic or forum you want to unsubscribe from, check the check box at the right side of that one. Make sure the selection box at the bottom is set to "Unsubscribe, and click on the "with selection" button.
