Codecs are a brand new concept for me. Hence the very low level of this message.

I am about to install Media Player Classic 6.4.9.0 rev 611, QuickTime Alternative (which will include that MPC), and Real Alternative Lite.

At Free-Codecs, in those packages I don't see an MPEG-4 capable codec (although it may be there and I'm missing it, because I don't really know what to look for). If in fact there is none there, what single codec (if available) should I get to be able to play MPEG-4 (which I think are known also as mp4) files?

One file I want to play has an m4v extension, but my understanding is that m4v is some sort of variant of MPEG-4 = mp4.

I know 'ffdshow' can play the m4v files. As for the mpeg4 codec:

Get K-Lite Codec Pack Standard. That contains ffdshow, which can play all types of MPEG-4 video.

Thanks for the links. I ended up installing the K-Lite MegaCodec pack, which included the MediaPlayerClassic 6.4.9.0 rev 611, Real Alternative, QuickTime Alternative, and ffdshow and Mpeg-4 (mp4) also.

But to enhance my understanding of this stuff: If I did for some reason want to install the AfterDawn DIVx codecs, then to prevent conflicts, I would need to uninstall any other DIVx codecs (such as any included in the K-Lite MegaCodec pack) first --- right?

Thanks. I ended up installing the K-Lite MegaCodec Pack, because although it included the K-Lite Full Codec pack (which I'm sure is much more than I needed), the MegaCodec pack included not only MediaPlayerClassic but also QuickTime Alternative and Real Alternative.

But there was a lot of the MegaPack's content that I did not install, because it was marked as being redundant due to also being part of MediaPlayerClassic or FfdShow. Nevertheless, I ended up with 82 megabytes of installed files.

So the next time I do this (I've got two more computers to set up), I'll try to figure out how to set up QuickTime Alternative and Real Alternative Lite first, and then install the K-Lite Standard codecs package.
