I have read any posts on the subject I could google, and have had no luck in getting WMP 10 to play the simplest divx files I had no problem playing in my past windows/WMP installs (as far as I remember).
#1 It's important for me to use WMP so that I can take full advantage of my new XP Media Centre Edition. When I had trouble running divx files on there I started looking into the codecs issue on my recently clean install of Win XP on the desktop.
I'm no newbie and have no habits of cluttering my system with codecs galore. For most purposes I only ever install the DivX codecs and Quicktime. This is exactly what I have on my Win XP system:
- DivX 6.3 Bundle (including the 6.2.5 codecs)
- QuickTime 7.1
NO OTHER CODECS PACKS ETC HAVE BEEN ISNTALLED
... yet, WMP 10 fails to play a simple DivX 4 (OpenDivX), Lavc50.1.0 encoded avi (info from GSpot)!
(Note the file plays ok in DivX player, but as I pointed out above it's important that I use WMP)
I've tried the uninstall/reinstall (of divx bundle), and on my MCE system I've additionally install K-Lite, and ffdshow just for good measure (note again that the desktop system I use for work I've kept clean with divx only so that codec conflicts should not be the culprit here).
Calling out the GURUS: Here is what I get in the Codec Tests output of GSpot when I try to open the simple divx file in question, NOTE THE FAILURES:
[... HECK, I couldn't copy & paste so I'm just attaching an entire gspot screen shot]
Just to cover all bases, I have all the latest ATI drivers for my Radeon 9200 installed.
So, what's the final verdict on WMP 10?
Mike
