Hi I really don't want to use FFDShow anymore because it has just to many things that I don't need. I only want to play Divx and Xvid files. Do I need to install both the Divx and Xvid codec or will one of them play both?

Ok after lookimg a little see there is Koepi's XviD Codec and Nic's XviD Codec. They both seem to be able to play both Divx and Xvid and Mpeg 4. Which is better?

I'd say it's your choice. The DivX (Pro or Free) codec will decode the common videotypes and 4CCs. Just like the XviD codecs...
This really depends on your needs.
I have the latest DivX codec as a basic. Also have Koepi's XviD now (previously nic's) - sometimes gives better quality.

So suggest install DivX codec first.
And it takes a few seconds to install/uninstall Koepi's XviD, and can be configured easily later (when you'd like to play a video using this).

Ok so if I install Divx from www.divx.com It will play all divx files and also be able to play all Xvid files and Mpeg4? Is that right?

Hi Gate1975mlm.

Yes, both are MPEg4 variants so will play both. Both Koepi/Nic's versions will work... difference in quality lies when you do some encoding. However, if just decoding video files then basic XVID or DIVX codec will work.

If doing some multimedia encoding, XVID is slightly better in terms of quality at smaller bitrate and size. cool.gif

Yes I will just be decoding. So I will just use the Divx Codec from Divx.com

Thanks for your help

Yes, and DivX Pro (has a 6 month free trial - at least wink.gif )
