sorry for the very basic question. I have tried 3 or 4 different tools for file conversion from AVI to MPG.

I have not found anything that simply keeps the same video dimension of the AVI file, same bit rate, and so on.

The rusults I have got so far are very poor. The quality of the converted file is deteriorated, even if the dimension od the file is often almost the double than the original.

Could you advise a very, very simple conversion tool, that even a newbe like me can use before I understand the rules of digital video?

I have three which do exactly what you want. They can all be found in SnapFiles: http://www.snapfiles.com/ When you get there, chose Freeware or Shareware.

Kate's Video Converter is FREE! It lets you set the width and height as you see free, and will do AVI to MPG no sweat.

Two really good Sharewares are Ultra Joiner which can crop, and join Video files, although you can do one at a time too, and Easy Converter. It too lets you set the size, but has no crop and join feature.

I have noticed very little degradation of Video Quality with these, and none for the sound track. Ultra will also allow you to change the volume level too.
