Occassionally I get a wmv file that when I try to play it media player classic says it cannot render the file. what does that mean? Do I just need to download another copy of it?

I assume you have latest Microsoft media runtime which is included with latest WMP. Likely video is corrupt or truncated file. Get a good copy or redownload.
