Hi, newbie here, hope someone can help me.

I have inherited some AVI files which wouldn't play video in WMP. I spent some time on the net, got Gspot and found out these were Divx3 encoded. I got DivX and played the files but the quality wasn't good and the DivX watermark was annoying, also I think it packaged stuff I didn't need.
Anyway, it sounded as though Xvid may be better software and I thought this would be a direct replacement for DivX so I removed DivX and installed XVid. However, the AVI files won't play again and Gspot tells me the codec (DivX3 Low-Motion) is not installed.
Is Xvid supposed to allow me to play DixX3 encoded AVI video, is there something I'm supposed to do, did it install badly or have I misunderstood how Xvid and DivX compare as codecs? I have spent some time looking for the answer now but haven't come up with anything!

Thanks anyone who can put me right!

Hooray, thanks! I didn't get my notification so only found your reply just now as I checked back in. I googled up ffdshow and I left XVid on as information seems to say XVid will play some vids that ffdshow won't.
Still don't know whether XVid was supposed to work, but as long as this works that's the main thing for now I guess! Thanks.
