I'm new here, just came in a few minutes ago.

I've been searching the Web (including Microsoft Forum) for a solution to this problem I'm having with the Video Settings of WMP 11, which I installed separately on my PC that still runs WinXP pro. When I play a DVD, WMP11 screen is so dark I need to adjust the brightness, but hell I can't! However, I CAN adjust my Video settings If I just play an .AVI file.

The codec I have installed is Klite Codec 5. The screen is dark (and can't adjust the video settings) so I decided to uninstall it. I tried other DVD decoders to no avail... Luckily enough, I found XP Codec Pack 2.50, and my whole viewing got so bright and clear!!! Thanks... I probabty don't need to dig deeper.

But since I'm in this lonely trail of finding a solution to this Video setting problem, can someone please comment on this. Is this a problem with WMP11, or is it a Codec problem.

I'm running the latest update on WMP11, and I tried running it on Vista with the same resuts.

For most video filetypes, you can change brightness/contrast under Enhancements...video settings.
Works for me under Windows 7.

For DVD playback, it depends on the decoder. I use FFdshow with Media pLayer Classic or PowerDVD player.
FFDshow has icons in system tray for quick access to different properties for video decoder.

My only problem is with Windows Media Player. Other media players (vlc, media player classic etc)
works fine and I can adjust video settings well within the player itself. I reckon it could be a WMP bug. I tried almost all know dvd/video decoders including those you mentioned to no avail. Right you are if you adjust the video settings via the decoder software, you can do it (I've done that and works), but not within WMP video setting controls.

It works fine with other file types, but not with DVD. So it must be some kind of limitation of WMP. Maybe it works with Microsoft's own MPEG2 decoder (from Vista), but I haven't tested that.

Hi! I am also experiencing some difficulties with my Windows Media Player. Have tried all the posted suggestions but i can't still fix it..Any suggestions?

I would suggest using alternative players for DVD playback if you need to adjust brightness/contrast/saturation etc.
Normally I use MEdia player Classic/Cinema for all video playback and Jet Audio/WMP for audio.

Likely need to purchase a 3rd party enhancement plugin or MPEG2 decoder to enhance DVD playback. The InterVideo DVD XPack is pretty good.
