I have an avi file in which GSpot cannot describe the codec and Media Player cannot recognize the decoder. Could anyone help me out here?

Hi!

When it is a proper .avi file, it should have a 4CC. What GSpot tells about that?

Cheers, buddy. The exact words shown on GSpot is [Type: Non-AVI File - Type Unknown.], and others "n.a.". However, it's a 684 mb movie file and I don't know if it's not an avi, what could it be. Have any ideas to identify it?

I guess you already tried to play it using many players... well, when it's reeealy an AVI VirtualDub or its modifications should handle that file.

Cheers. But VirtualDub cannot open it either. I guess that it has the xvid for video and ac3 for audio codec. So is there any way I can write this information into this file to make it working? thanks a lot.

So you cannot open it at all... but sure it's an avi. unsure.gif

You can change or write the 4CC code with AVI FourCC Changer but if not succeeded, there are other AVI editing/fixing tools in the free-codecs.com's Tools section. I'm not sure which can handle your file. Try some of those. I hope you'll be able to write that infomation and manage to solve this problem.

Try MediaInfo, it will tell you everything about the mediafile (if it's a mediafile..).

Have tried MediaINfo and AVIcodec and still got no joy. I have NERO and when i play it on that it says the file maybe corrupt. If thats the case is there anything i can do?

We usually suggest in these cases, try to play it with VLC, 'cause it can play partial AVI files.

If it's corrupted, you may have luck with these reair tools:
DivFix
http://free-codecs.com/download/DivFix.htm

or DivXRepair, AVImedic.

I have used AVImedic and DIVFix. DivFix did not recognise the file as an AVI file and AVImedic said evreything was ok with the file and i may need some specific codec or the file was corrupted during encoding. Is there anyway i can find out which codec it needs? GSPOT doesnt work with this file.
