hey, is it possible to convert secure wma to mp3, i ask because i got a cd form bmg music club that is only in secure wma, and the cd has to download keys to your comp to be able to read and transfer the files, i have an ipod wich obvioulsy will not work with wma and if i try to convert the files straight they skip around when played, is there any software(free preferably) that could get me around this? i dont want to do anything illegal with the files once i get them on my comp, but since getting an ipod i dont even have a cd player anymore. i already checked google but i can't find anything so if any of you could lead me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it. thanks, kyle

Do you mean these are DRM protected WMAs?
It's buggy to convert them to mp3 format directly, even you have bought them so you got licensed version.
Try first the dBpowerAMP Music Converter.
Maybe you'll be able to convert. When not, you can record them & save right to the MP3 format.

Also Audacity is a great tool for recording and then direct MP3 encoding (needs the LAME MP3 Encoder installed).

Don't want to anything illegal, eh? Yet, you are suggesting that you want to crack the WMA using DRM (anti-piracy protection) and convert it to MP3.

You realize Apple has its own proprietary digital licenses with its iTunes software and music, right? So even if you got software like FREEME to bypass the protection or use a music ripper...no guarantees it will play anyway.

You will likely be stuck playing their AAC(MP4) licensed music files.. Can you tell I'm not a fan of IPOD?

But recording is legal at all! And these WMAs are lossy formats so.... capture them

Alright guys here it is. The newest and fastest way to convert your drm wma's to mp3 format. Yes it is faster than using winamp. On my computer it takes about 1 min. to convert one drm wma file to mp3 format(note i am running winamp in the backround and also a antivirus. and also my computer is only 900mgz and 256 mb ram, so it will be much faster for you the better the computer you have.) the downfall to this is you cannot do anything else while vertuosa(yes i said vertuosa, it works like a charm with a little modificaion)is running in the background.

Don't think we can justify this action as backup legal copies since it's quite debatable whether files are owned by user or just on loan/lease for a 30 day trial period.

If you put a lock -- an access control -- around a copyrighted work, it is illegal to break that lock. It's illegal to make a tool that breaks that lock. It's illegal to tell someone how to make that tool. It's illegal to tell someone where she can find out how to make that tool. So yes, this DOES qualify as cracking the software bit (which is illegal) in order to convert to another format.
