Microsoft Introduces Unified Game Development Tool

March 26, 2004

At the Game Developer's Conference, Microsoft announced a new software tool for game development that aims to cross-pollinate features between the Xbox and other Windows gaming platforms.

Microsoft's XNA will port certain XBox features over to the Windows and Windows Mobile operating systems, including capabilities like billing, matchmaking, and security from the Xbox Live online service.

By contrast, some Windows graphics technologies like High-Level Shader Language (HLSL) will be made available to Xbox developers.

Also planned is a new controller design which will standardize game pad inputs across the Xbox and PC platforms.
